CBD, CBD, CBD… Likely you are seeing CBD signs everywhere you look, between your local grocer and some unlikely places like your gym and yoga studio.
How come the overnight interest in this supposed “miracle medicine?” And what of the claims are true and not true?
It is our job to help and it’s what we love to do.
We are here to educate where we can and empower those with credible information to make the best choices for their health and the health of their loved ones. It’s time to understand the ins and outs and get some real answers on just what CBD is all about.
CBD is short for Cannabidiol which is a cannabinoid. Because it originates from a plant, it is further classified as a phytocannabinoid (plant based cannabinoid). CBD can be found within the Cannabis Sativa species, which is broken down into Hemp and Cannabis.
The difference between Hemp and Cannabis is the amount of THC, another phytocannabinoid in the Cannabis Sativa plant species. Cultivars (previously known as strains) are classified as Hemp that have less than .3% THC concentration.
In most stores and online markets, CBD is derived from Hemp due to the Farm Bill of 2018, which made Hemp legal in all of the US. With the Hemp legalization, the market flooded with products that has kept the FDA busy due to synthetics, false labels, poor regulations and more. Several agencies and social groups have stepped forward to aid in creating a more systemized process to ensure safe, quality products ultimately stay on the market while the others are removed.
In this article, we want to help you understand what CBD from Hemp is and is not. There are several claims out there, some as a “miracle cure” and others as “the best new medicine,” just to name a couple.
While we will be discussing the potential value of CBD derived from a Hemp cultivar, as a reminder to our community: The Sacred Plant experts prefer Cannabis cultivars with a wide variety and higher concentration of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, including THC at levels over .3%. With Hemp deemed legal across the US, we take it as a stepping stone leading to the higher potential of Cannabis becoming completely legal and accessible to all that need it.
Before we can dive into all the wonderful benefits of Hemp CBD, let’s weed through all the gimmicks and false information.
CBD is not all created and treated equal. CBD from isolates or synthetics goes against how this constituent exists in nature. When we alter, such as in most cases with CBD extracting the isolate molecule, we are changing not only its ability to work within our bodies but how effective it can ultimately be.
Some companies are quoting whole-plant application tests for their CBD isolate products. Why is this concerning? When using CBD isolates or synthetics more is needed to see results as compared to whole plant medicine. This can lead to increased risk of drug to drug interactions, increased potential of adverse effects such as inducing anxiety or irritability, and decrease the positive results you ultimately are seeking. The rule of thumb to stand by: A rich, whole-plant application is going to be safer, more effective, and have side benefits as opposed to side effects.
Hemp (or cannabis for that matter) is non-addictive, including the constituents within such as CBD and even THC. Addiction is the event of which someone cannot mentally or physically withstand from consuming a substance even in the event of negative effects on their health or lives and when consumption does come to an end there are severe withdrawal effects of the body.
For additional clarity, addiction is not the same as misuse. Cannabis and Hemp have been misused over the years following prohibition back in the 1920’s and pushed to the black market. With more information coming to the forefront we hope to see the level of misuse reduced while understanding and acceptance increased.
Though there has been substantial research done on the topic of cancer and cannabinoids, it is important to note: CBD does NOT cure cancer. In many lab studies, CBD has been shown to be anti-cancerous in that it can help Chemo find the cancer cells while staying away from healthy cells, as well as causes the cancer cells to be “sticky” which reduces and potentially eliminates risk of metastasis.
Empower or government drug tests are looking to THC in your system, not specifically CBD. We have been discussing whole plant applications, this means that we are taking everything in the plant and extracting it as a whole as compared to isolate or partial extractions. By default there is going to be THC in the product, once again for Hemp it will be under .3%. Though there is considerably less potential for Hemp products to show on a drug test, the reality is there is still some risk to be aware of.
Though The Sacred Plant discusses Cannabis cultivars being preferred over Hemp when treating conditions and diseases, there is still tremendous amount of benefit possible from Hemp derived whole plant CBD.
CBD has been shown to reduce free radicals which can lead to reduction of risk of neurological degradation, as well as actively fight against Gram-positive bacteria known to cause many severe infections.
Plays a role in helping regulate insulin levels as well as sugars being converted into stored fat. Studies further show that overall body fat index is lower, as well.
Has been shown to help reduce risk of heart disease through reducing deposits of fatty plaques within the artery walls.
In a variety of studies, there has been evidence of being an anxiolytic for a variety of different types of anxiety related concerns and conditions. Treating anxiety and anxiety related concerns dates back thousands of years as first mentioned in the Pen Ts’ao, a medical encyclopedia written by “The Father of Medicine”, Shen-Nung.
Hemp and Cannabis alike have shown to be effective in helping reduce and at times eliminate different types and levels of seizures, including in preventive measures as well as during an episode to reduce severity and duration.
Contrary to stigmas that Cannabis is a “gateway” drug, CBD and other constituents have been shown to reduce cravings and associated anxiety of opioid addiction, helping provide a safe aid in getting off of hard drugs.
Aside from Cannabis and Hemp being useful to our health, there are also practical reasons why Hemp is selected over Cannabis cultivars, in certain circumstances.
Hemp is legal across the US which makes it easier, safer, and much less stressful to have to travel with. You are legally able to obtain and cross state lines, while otherwise, Cannabis derived cultivars are still illegal. This can also be used for those who are in legal states with access to Cannabis that are traveling outside their state and need something in the meantime until they return and are able to pick their regular protocol back up.
Hemp derived whole-plant CBD as mentioned contains less than .3% of THC. Though THC has incredible health benefits, there can be misuse without proper clarity and guidance. In a whole plant Hemp CBD product the margin of safety is very wide, and in the event of an adverse effect the severity is mild and resolved within less than a day.
Hemp becoming legal has allowed access all over the US and beyond between in person or online markets, even reaching those in low populated areas.
As we near the end of our educational journey through Hemp CBD, it gets clearer on just how powerful of a supplement this can be, and how greatly it can impact our overall wellness.
With each of these varying benefits such as being an anxiolytic and neuroprotectant, it is no wonder that patients, medical experts, and researchers alike are seeing positive results for conditions such as PTSD, Anxiety, Depression and more. Conditions such as Arthritis and Ulcerative Colitis are seeing relief from inflammation leading to their pain being alleviated.
Everyone at the end of the day could benefit from whole plant Hemp CBD by reducing overall stress, improved mood and boosts to your energy.
