CBD is short for Cannabidiol which is a cannabinoid. Because it originates from a plant, it is further classified as a phytocannabinoid (plant-based cannabinoid). CBD can be found within the Cannabis Sativa species, which is broken down into Hemp and Cannabis.
No, Hemp Seed Oil is NOT the same as Hemp (CBD) Oil. Hemp Seed Oil is through the process of extracting the oils from the seedlings of hemp cultivars. Hemp (CBD) Oil is through extraction of the leaves, stalk, and/or flowers, and ideally found in a whole plant application which uses all aspects of the plant within the extraction.
This question depends on the percentage of THC found within the cultivar. If the cultivar (previously known as “strains”) extraction is from Hemp (classified as the Cannabis Sativa species with less than 0.3% THC) then the CBD is legal through the Farm Bill of 2018 in the United States. If the cultivar is from Cannabis (classified as over 0.3% of THC of the Cannabis Sativa species) this is illegal in certain states, as Cannabis is still within the Schedule 1 federal regulations.
CBD has been shown to have a wide safety window. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported CBD as not only being a promising and well-tolerated medical intervention but also having a good safety profile that shows little to no risk of abuse, dependence, and other negative health issues. When used within a whole plant application, the safety margin goes up even further.
CBD does NOT cause euphoric effects, it will not get you “high” or cause an “out of body” experience that has become associated with THC. Many of the cannabinoids and terpenes that have been studied from the Cannabis Sativa species have been found to be psychoactive – which means that they alter your mood in some form such as CBD improving mood and elevating energy in some patients.
When used in a whole plant application, most of the Cannabis Sativa species (this includes Hemp and Cannabis) will have some amount of THC. Drug tests are looking at the levels of THC within the system, and because of this, there is some potential for the drug test to show a positive within the bloodstream. Please note that there are ‘pure’ CBD products with zero THC included.
Note for those who are also interested in using a product topically, if there is a cut or break in the skin there is potential for the topical to enter into the bloodstream. Though the risk is minimal, it is important to note that this may also cause a positive reading on the results of a drug test.
CBD works through a system within our bodies known as the Endocannabinoid System. Research shows that the CBD molecule, as well as many of the other constituents found within the Cannabis Sativa plant, mimic our naturally occurring endocannabinoids that work through this system to maintain homeostasis, protect the body, and repair where needed within the other areas of our body such as the immune system, nervous system, digestive system, and more.
Through this interaction, CBD is able to help – like a key in a lock – the ECS power back on to perform these essential mechanisms. In addition, CBD has shown to interact directly within our Cannabinoid Receptors within the brain and throughout our bodies to provide additional benefits such as mood balance, neuroprotection, stress relief, and more.
Each person is unique. Depending on your needs as they relate to onset and duration will help you to decide which product most suits your specific situation. The Sacred Plant helps to break this down in more detail in our articles 7 Tips For Selecting a Quality CBD Product and The Hidden Truths and Lies About Hemp CBD.
There are several different ways to consume CBD products, some of the simplest are Capsules, Oils, and Topicals (Balms and Creams).
Capsules offer one of the best ways to ingest the plant matter. When using capsules, it is best to have liposomal casings that allow for the capsule to pass through the acids of the stomach and into the digestive tract that allows for the best possible absorption. Capsules have a slightly longer onset, ranging from 45 minutes upwards of a couple of hours, with a long duration of relief for up to 6 – 8 hours depending.
Oils (or Tinctures when made from an alcohol or oil extraction) offer a sublingual application, which has a shorter window of onset typically averaging 15 minutes, and a duration of 2 – 3 hours. Along with being one of the easiest to consume, it is also easiest to accurately dose. Using incremental droppers, you can ensure that you are taking the correct dose each time, as long as you know the concentration and ratio of the application.
Topicals are best for surface area and localized concerns, such as joints or muscles. Topicals can have an onset of a couple of minutes upwards of 10 minutes, depending on the location applied and the strength of the topical. The duration can be up to 1- 2 hours. This is a great option for those who need relief here and there, or in addition to a systemic application for those days that you need a bit of extra support.
Most experts recommend starting with an Oil Sublingual application, which has a short onset window and mild duration. This allows for the user to become acclimated within a controlled method and environment, has a short duration so that if there is a concern of adverse effects they will wear off within a quick time frame, and it has fewer nuances associated with absorption as opposed to the other applications.
No one size fits all. Each person will have their own unique optimal dosage, which is defined as the lowest dose possible that provides the greatest relief with little to no adverse effects. Please remember to discuss with your physician any changes to your health protocol before incorporating, removing, or adjusting anything. These guidelines are shared for informational purposes only and not meant to replace the care or recommendation of your medical provider.
The rule of thumb is to always start low and go slow. We discuss using a CBD application in “microdoses.” A microdose can be as little as 2.5 mg total of a whole plant application. Starting at 1 microdose, you will want to acclimate your body to the plant application. Depending on how you feel at that microdose for 3 – 4 days, possibly longer depending on your comfort zone, if you are needing more relief and not experiencing adverse effects such as anxiousness, irritableness, overly alert at bedtime, and similar then you would increase using another microdose in the evening. This process will continue until you find your personal optimal dose.
Note, if you are not experiencing the relief you want and need while experiencing possible adverse effects, then you may want to change formulations or applications to find something better suited to your needs.
Testing is your baseline to ensure you are getting a quality product. Checking to make sure that the label concentration matches the lab tests, there are no contaminants, and that it is less than 6 months old at the time of purchasing. We have outlined the 7 Tips For Selecting a Quality CBD Product to help shine light into what can seem like a complex process.
In whole-plant applications there is more than CBD in the product. In Hemp-based applications, there is less than 0.3% of THC, which can still be present in the end product that can also be beneficial to your health. In addition, there are a variety of cannabinoids, minor cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and more that are also beneficial to our Endocannabinoid System that in turn benefits our overall health. Products that are CBD only (isolates) have a lower margin of safety, more tends to be needed, and it loses the side benefits of a whole plant application.
